Heavy rainfall drives a surge in ridership for Namma Metro, resulting in an impressive revenue of ₹48.35 crore, as commuters seek reliable transport amid monsoon disruptions.

Bengaluru’s Namma Metro has reported a remarkable surge in ridership this October, attributed to heavy rainfall that has driven commuters to seek reliable transportation options amid the city’s notorious traffic jams. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced that the metro recorded 1.85 crore passengers for the month, generating a revenue of Rs 48.35 crore – an increase of Rs 9.22 crore compared to the same period last year.

The spike in usage reflects a broader trend as more residents turn to the metro during the monsoon season, avoiding the delays caused by flooding and traffic congestion on the roads. BMRCL’s Majestic station emerged as the busiest hub, handling the highest footfall among all stations in the network.

This October’s ridership marks a significant increase from previous years, with an additional 32.90 lakh passengers compared to October 2023. From January to October 24 this year, BMRCL reported a total of 1.52 crore passengers, highlighting a growing reliance on metro services as a preferred mode of transport.

Despite the challenges posed by heavy rains—which led to temporary disruptions in services due to fallen trees—BMRCL has managed to maintain operational efficiency by adjusting train frequencies and ensuring quick responses to service interruptions. The recent rains have not only boosted ridership but also underscored the importance of Namma Metro in facilitating daily commutes during adverse weather conditions.

As Bengaluru continues to grapple with monsoon-related disruptions, BMRCL’s success in achieving record ridership and revenue signifies a positive trend for public transportation in the city, reinforcing Namma Metro’s role as a vital component of Bengaluru’s urban mobility landscape.
