BMRCL announces a comprehensive tree planting plan alongside its ongoing metro expansion to offset environmental impact.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is embarking on an ambitious reforestation effort. This initiative aims to plant 15,000 trees at a cost of Rs 76.9 crore, mitigating the environmental effects of Namma Metro’s Phase 2 expansion.
Phased Planting
The project will be executed in stages, beginning with the plantation of 5,000 saplings in Dabus Town, near the 4th Industrial Area. Each phase of the project will have a budget of Rs 2.03 crore.
Expansion and Sustainability
The remainder of the saplings will be planted across garden and buffer zones on KIADB lands in Doddaballapur and other government properties. This step is part of BMRCL’s ongoing commitment to integrate environmental sustainability with infrastructure growth.
Conservation Efforts
Prior to this initiative, BMRCL had relocated 856 trees and transplanted another 1,193 to avoid loss during metro work. In anticipation of the monsoon, they also plan to prune potentially hazardous branches along key metro corridors to ensure safety and uninterrupted service.
Community and Environmental Support
Environmental groups are actively involved in this project and contribute to the tender process. Planting is scheduled for the rainy season to fully take advantage of the optimal growing conditions for the new saplings.
